9/11: Forever Remember

As you probably expected, we’ve taken some time away from our move-in day posts to create a tribute to the victims and survivors of 9/11.  We are part of the last generation that might remember this day.  Being only five at the time, I don’t recall much. My only worry was: why am I not going to school?  But I’m sure those of you who were of a more comprehending age, remember that day with finer detail than most.  My dad called my mom the morning it happened and told her to turn on the t.v.

“Which channel?”  She asked.

And he said, “It doesn’t matter.”

The total bare honesty of that statement has made it stick with me.  Every channel was covering it because it mattered to the whole country.  It matters to the whole country.  Even those of us who weren’t ready to understand it are now starting to.  And I emphasize starting to because I know it’s something you can never fully grasp if you weren’t there.  So I’ve posted a song below that I wrote on the tenth anniversary of the attack, dedicated to everyone left behind who continues to deal with their grief.  It’s not the best song in the world, or even the best song I’ve written, but it’s my favorite because it’s the most honest.  And even though I can never grasp the brokenness this tragedy caused, there are millions of people just like me who still want to help in any way we can.  This is really the only way I know how.

You’re Not Alone

I know that I don’t understand what it’s like to be you.

I know that I don’t understand everything that you’ve been through.

I know that I don’t understand, what it is you feel,

Or how you wake up every morning wishin’ that it wasn’t real.

I know that I don’t understand, and I never can.

I just want you to know that there always is a helping hand.

If ever there’s a time where you just feel you can’t go on,

I am here, I love you, and for you I will be strong,

I want you to remember I have shoulders to cry on.

You’re not alone,

I’ll be here for you.

A light in the dark,

When you’re so confused.

I’ll be your guide,

To leave this all behind.

A rainbow after storms,

In my colors you’ll find.

That you are not alone.

I know that you may disregard those who try to comfort you.

I know that if I were you, I would disregard them too.

And I know that you may tune out what will be spoken next,

But I want you to know that for you it’s what I think is best.

I know that you may try to ignore that anything has changed,

But I want you to know that you are not the one to blame.

I know your heart is breaking and it’s ripping you in two,

But just because they died doesn’t mean you have to die too.

You should always remember that they’re still alongside you.

You’re not alone,

I’ll be here for you.

A light in the dark,

When you’re so confused.

I’ll be your guide,

To leave this all behind.

A rainbow after storms,

In my colors you’ll find.

That you are not alone.

I said,

You are not alone.

No, you’re not alone.

You’re never alone.

Forever Remember.
